Privat
Bridges giftet seg med Dorothy Louise Simpson i New York 1938. Sammen fikk de fire barn, deriblant skuespillerne Jeff og Beau Bridges. Sønnen Garrett Myles Bridges døde av krybbedød i 1948. Han var farfar til skuespilleren Jordan Bridges.
Bridges fremmet en verdensregjering. «The devastation caused by war and the pollution of our environment knows no boundaries. Only an effective world government could provide sufficient law and have the power to control these destructive forces.»[7] Han støttet også flere organisasjoner, blant andre Oceana og Heal the Bay.
Bridges døde 10. mars 1998, 85 år gammel.
Utmerkelser
Han mottok en stjerne på Hollywood Walk of Fame i 1994.[8]
