Carter G. Woodson

Carter Godwin Woodson (19 de dezembro de 1875 - 3 de abril de 1950) foi um historiador, autor, jornalista norte-americano e fundador da Associação para o Estudo da Vida e História Afro-Americana (ASALH).[1]

Carreira

Ele foi um dos primeiros estudiosos a estudar a história da diáspora africana, incluindo a história afro-americana. Fundador do The Journal of Negro History em 1916, Woodson foi chamado de "pai da história negra". Em fevereiro de 1926, ele lançou a celebração da "Semana da História Negra", precursora do Black History Month. Woodson foi uma figura importante para o movimento do afrocentrismo, por sua perspectiva de colocar os afrodescendentes no centro do estudo da história e da experiência humana.[1][2][3][4]

Vida

Nascido na Virgínia, filho de ex-escravos, Woodson teve que adiar os estudos enquanto trabalhava nas minas de carvão da Virgínia Ocidental. Ele se formou no Berea College e tornou-se professor e administrador escolar. Obtendo diplomas de pós-graduação na Universidade de Chicago, Woodson se tornou o segundo afro-americano, depois de W. E. B. Du Bois, a obter um doutorado na Universidade de Harvard. Woodson é a única pessoa cujos pais foram escravizados nos Estados Unidos a obter um PhD em história. Ele lecionou em faculdades historicamente negras, Howard University e West Virginia State University, mas passou a maior parte de sua carreira em Washington, D.C., gerenciando a ASALH, falando em público, escrevendo e publicando.[1][5]
