Pierwszą edycję rozgrywek rozegrano w 1872 roku (przerwa w latach 1940–1945 w powodu wybuchu II wojny światowej) i ówczesny ich triumfator – FC Wanderers nie miał trenera, a drużyną kierował kapitan klubu – Charles William Alcock. Dotychczas rozgrywki wygrało 56 Anglików, 18 Szkotów, 5 Włochów, 4 Hiszpanów, 3 Holendrów, 2 Francuzów i Irlandczyków z Północy oraz 1 Niemiec i Portugalczyk.
Herbert Chapman i Billy Walker są jedynymi trenerami triumfujących w rozgrywkach z dwoma różnymi klubami. Pierwszy z nich triumfował w edycji 1921/1922 z Huddersfield Town oraz edycji 1929/1930 z Arsenalem Londyn, natomiast Billy Walker triumfował w edycji 1934/1935 z Sheffield Wednesday oraz edycji 1958/1959 z Nottingham Forest.
Pierwszym trenerem spoza Wysp Brytyjskich triumfującym w rozgrywkach był Holender Ruud Gullit z Chelsea Londyn w edycji 1996/1997.
