The Monkees på Commons

The Monkees var en amerikansk popgruppe. Den ble etablert i Los Angeles i 1965 for en amerikansk TV-serie med samme navn fra selskapet NBC. Serien ble sendt fra 1965 til 1968 (også på NRK) og bidro til å gjøre gruppa til en av tiårets mest populære. I en periode solgte den flere plater enn The Beatles.

The Monkees ble offisielt oppløst i 1971. Gruppa har fått en stjerne på Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Historie

The Monkees ble etablert på initiativ av TV-produsentene Bert Schneider og Bob Rafelson i selskapet NBC. Idéen og inspiriasjonen til programmet var Richard Lesters Beatles-film A Hard Day's Night. Det ble annonsert i pressen etter interesserte deltakere. Navnet The Monkees ble laget med skrivefeil for å tilsvare navnet til The Beatles (beetles) og The Byrds (birds).

I perioden 12. september 1966 til 19. august 1968 ble det sendt i alt 58 episoder, hver på 25 minutter i USA.

Etter TV-serien spilte gruppa inn filmen Head. Deretter ble «TV-spesialen» 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee laget i 1969. Etter dette sluttet Tork i gruppa. Etter ytterligere to album forlot også Nesmith The Monkees som ble til en duo bestående av Dolenz og Jones. Etter albumet Changes ble gruppa oppløst i 1971. The Monkees har imidlertid flere ganger blitt gjenforent, ved de fleste anledningene uten Nesmith.

Kritikere mente at gruppa utelukkende var et kommersielt produkt kun sammensatt for å produsere TV-programmer. Til å begynne med spilte gruppemedlemmene ikke selv på instrumenter, mens de riktignok hele tiden stod for sanginnslagene.

The Monkees regnes for å være pophistoriens første boyband.

Vazelina Bilopphøggers lagde en coverversjon av «I'm a believer» kalt «Da var det schæfer'n beit». I teksten ble schæferen gitt navnet Monkey etter The Monkees
