Hayden White (født 12. juli 1928, død 5. mars 2018) var en historiker fra USA. Han var professor emeritus ved University of California, Santa Cruz. Han er kjent for sin inndeling av historieskriving i fire ulike typer basert på litterære kriterier.

Hayden Whites historietypologi

I artikkelen Historiefagets fortellinger i NNT 4/1995 appliserte Sejersted Hayden Whites litterære klassifikasjonsskjema på norske historikere. Ifølge denne kategoriseringen finnes det fire syn: romansen, komedien, satiren og tragedien.

• Romansen innebærer at historien har et mål, og at dette målet er godt: «utviklingslinjene ender i et fremtidig idealsamfunn, enhetlig, lykkelig, frigjørende for det verdifulle i menneskelivet». Historiens drivkraft er relatert til en metafysisk teleologi. P.A. Munch (1810–63) og Ernst Sars (1835–1917) er representanter for dette historiesynet.

• Komedien innebærer at historiefortellingen ender når sirkelen er sluttet. Og slutten er god. Historien har midlertidig blitt brutt av en misforståelse som så oppklares. Også her er historiens drivkraft relatert til en metafysisk teleologi. Sverre Steen (1898–1983) representerer dette historiesynet.

• Satiren innebærer at den historiske utvikling vil ende med en tilstand som ikke er god fordi politikerne begår et «evig forræderi» og dette forræderi er en nødvendig konsekvens av krefter i historien. Drivkreftene er sosiale faktorer. Sejersted foreslår, med forbehold, at Jens Arup Seip (1905–1992) er representant for dette historiesynet.

• Tragedien innebærer at historien kan utvikle seg i ulike retninger, men blant aktørene kan det være «forrædere». Forræderiet er situasjonsbetinget. Sejersted hevder at Edvard Bull d.y. (1914–1986) representerer dette synet.
