Rock eksperimental, juga dipanggil avant-rock, ialah subgenre muzik rock[2] yang menolak sempadan komposisi biasa dan teknik persembahan[11] atau yang bereksperimen dengan elemen asas genre tersebut.[12] Artis bertujuan untuk membebaskan dan berinovasi, dengan beberapa ciri membezakan genre ialah persembahan improvisasi, pengaruh avant-garde, instrumentasi ganjil, lirik legap (atau instrumental), struktur dan irama yang tidak ortodoks, dan penolakan asas terhadap aspirasi komersial.[3]

Sejak penubuhannya, muzik rock adalah percubaan, tetapi tidak sampai akhir 1960-an artis rock mula mencipta gubahan yang panjang dan kompleks melalui kemajuan dalam rakaman multitrack. Pada tahun 1967, genre ini berdaya maju secara komersial seperti muzik pop, tetapi pada tahun 1970, kebanyakan pemain terkemukanya telah melumpuhkan diri mereka dalam beberapa bentuk. Di Jerman, subgenre krautrock menggabungkan unsur-unsur improvisasi dan rock psychedelic dengan muzik elektronik, avant-garde dan karya klasik kontemporari. Kemudian pada tahun 1970-an, pembiakan silang muzik yang ketara berlaku seiring dengan perkembangan punk dan gelombang baharu, percubaan DIY, dan muzik elektronik. Irama funk, jazz-rock, dan fusion turut disepadukan ke dalam muzik rock eksperimen.

Kugiran rock eksperimen awal 1980-an mempunyai beberapa preseden langsung untuk bunyi mereka. Kemudian dalam dekad itu, avant-rock mengejar estetika psychedelic yang berbeza daripada kesedaran diri dan kewaspadaan post-punk terdahulu. Semasa 1990-an, pergerakan longgar yang dikenali sebagai post-rock menjadi bentuk dominan batuan eksperimen. Setakat 2010-an, istilah "rock eksperimen" telah jatuh kepada penggunaan sembarangan, dengan banyak kumpulan rock moden dikategorikan di bawah awalan seperti "post-", "kraut-", "psych-", "art-", "prog -", "avant-" dan "bising-".
