Fodice is an unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States.^[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 49 in 2000.

History

The area in what is known as Fodice today was founded sometime after the American Civil War. It may have been named for the fact that the residents liked to play a game called "four dice", or as an alternate spelling of Fordyce, Arkansas, where the community's first settlers moved from. A Methodist church was erected in 1875. A post office was established at Fodice in 1902 and remained in operation until 1966. There were two general stores, a cotton gin, a gristmill, and a Masonic lodge in the community in 1914. It had a church and a cemetery for the next two decades and 25 residents in 1936. It grew to 50 in the mid-1970s. It still had a church, a cemetery, and several scattered houses in the early 1990s with mostly African American residents. The population was 49 in 1990 and 2000.^[2]

Geography

Fodice is located on U.S. Highway 287 at the intersection of Fodice Road and Farm to Market Road 4200, 4 mi (6.4 km) west of Pennington and 14 mi (23 km) southeast of Crockett in southern Houston County.^[3]

Education

Fodice had its own school in 1886 and continued to operate in the mid-1930s. It closed sometime after World War II.^[2] Today, the community is served by the Groveton Independent School District.
